Advantages of feeding milk replacer instead of your herd's milk or waste milk.

  1. Cost:  Comparison based on average calf consumption of 400 lb. of whole milk vs. one 50 lb bag of milk replacer during the first 6 weeks of feeding.

    1 lb. milk replacer/day = 4 quarts liquid mlik = 1 gal = 8 lbs.

 50 lb. milk replacer = 200 quarts liquid milk = 50 gal = 400 lbs.

Whole milk cost Milk Replacer Cost
4 x (current milk price per cwt.) One 50 lb. bag of milk replacer
4 x (18.00) = $72.00 $60.00
$12.00 Difference

2.  Milk replacer is disease free, an important factor for herds affected wtih Salmonella or Johne's

3.  Medicated for disease prevention.

4.  Increased supplementation of Vitamins A, D, E, & B vitamins

5.  Whole milk has variable solids composition leading to increased incidence of scours.

6.  High fat content in whole milk decreases starter intake and therefore rumen developement.
